Important Tips For Picking The Right Forum Software For Your Site

There's been a raging debate about the usefulness of Forums in this Social Media Era. As far as a good number are concerned, Forums are dead and obsolete in the face of platforms like Reddit. One argument I usually put forward is if it makes sense to pour all your energy into a Sub Reddit which you don't have much control over, can't migrate to another platform and can barely monetize outside voluntary donations.

I quite agree that Forums -as we used to know them- died a long time ago. General Forums (Nairaland style) clearly don't work anymore as a means of meeting / engaging with people so don't blame yourself for your Forum not becoming popular despite so much effort. Recent trends however strongly suggest that Niche Forums are going nowhere anytime soon.

What is a Niche Forum?
A Niche Forum is one which focuses on a specific (narrowed down) topic like just Cars, Boats, Tech. etc. I won't delve much into so we don't derail.

Now, if you believe that a Forum is the right way to go on your website then these 5 tips will help you make the right choice.

5 crucial things to consider when choosing a Forum software
A few months after I founded Hovatek.com , it was pretty obvious that we would need a Forum. You see, Hovatek is a Nigerian Tech. Support website where we provide free online solutions / support for device related problems and questions. We were initially using Facebook but had to migrate to a Forum. Facebook wasn't sustainable for several reasons, one being because we have a global fan base that needs different types of support. Looking back, I wish there was someone to teach me all I've had to learn the hard way. Lucky for you, you have this post to guide you right.

1. Consider your budget
There are both free and paid forum software. When starting out, its important you know your finances and choose based on what you can afford. If you have a sound financial plan and believe you can get the Forum to begin paying for its licence quickly then you may consider a paid option. If you are however uncertain about the prospects of the Forum or don't yet have a sound strategy then I suggest you stick with free. Mind you, free isn't necessarily the better option even on a low budget, why? My next point will shed more light on this.

2. Active development is key
The last thing you want is to be stuck with a Forum software which isn't enjoying active development anymore. In the age we are, software bugs and vulnerabilities are discovered almost everyday. If your Forum software isn't patched regularly, that makes you a sitting duck. Even if you're a coding Guru, you'll eventually get burned out from constantly patching bugs and managing your Forum at the same time.

3. Inbuilt core features or no deal
If you need to install plugins to get core features like notifications, mentions, Ad integration etc then you have one more reason to worry. Vulnerable plugins are another security concern so if you find yourself having no choice but to stack up plugins (which aren't constantly updated) then you're in for a long haul. When starting out, I usually strongly suggest installing just a few plugins if you must. Your forum should be able to function on a basic level without plugins.

4. Tweakability
If you're looking to manage a Forum then you had better learn basic HTML & CSS. PHP and Javascript would be an advantage but not necessary for you to learn. Its hard work managing a Forum and that's me talking from years of experience. Moderating is infact the easiest part because things break regularly and you have to figure out how to fix them. You'll need a Forum software which is easy to modify without having to delve into confusing code all the time.

You should also consider one that makes it easy to make changes to the template without getting lost in a sea of PHP code. Unlike in HTML, just one wrong character in a PHP script is enough to take down your entire script so you don't want to be messing around there if you don't know what you're doing.

5. Ease of migration
What happens when your Forum has grown in size and you're looking to migrate to another Forum software but can't because there's no import / conversion script from your current software to the desired one? Would you begin copying one post / thread at a time? definitely not. For this reason, you should find out which other Forum software your desired Forum software can be exported / converted to. The longer that list, the better for you

All We Know so Far About The iPhone 8

Apple is widely expected to launch new iPhones in September.

There's been a ton of speculation and reports about the upcoming iPhone, including that it'll be redesigned.

The pressure is on Apple, too. It's the 10th anniversary of the first iPhone, launched in 2007, and the company is expected to have some big plans to mark the occasion.

Here's what you need to know about the upcoming iPhone:

Apple is expected to launch three iPhones: one that's redesigned, and two updates to the current iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Analysts have suggested several names for the redesigned iPhone, including "iPhone Pro," "iPhone Edition," "OLED iPhone," and "iPhone 8," which we're calling it.

This report will focus entirely on the iPhone 8.

The redesigned iPhone is the model that has received the most attention. It's expected to have an edge-to-edge, curved screen with much smaller bezels than the current iPhone 7. The screen uses a newer kind of display technology called OLED that promises to use less power and provide darker blacks.

Apple seemingly confirmed the iPhone 8 redesign with significantly smaller bezels in this image included in HomePod firmware it distributed. The codename for this image? D22.

This design would allow Apple to pack more screen into the same size phone.

This bigger screen is expected to have a resolution of 1125x2436, according to Apple's leaked code as well as a forecast from KGI Securities.

The iPhone 8 is expected to have a front camera with 3D sensing and modeling functions, allowing it not only to take photos, but also to manipulate them. The front-facing camera will be used for facial recognition, either to replace the Touch ID fingerprint sensor or to supplement it.

The rear camera will also have its two rear lenses vertically oriented, as opposed to horizontal, like on the iPhone 7 Plus.

With a new edge-to-edge design, Apple is expected to eliminate the home button and build its functions into the screen.

It's unclear whether the fingerprint sensor will be built into the screen as well or whether the new "Face ID" feature replaces it.

And finally, Apple will also be adding wireless charging to the models coming out in September.

Facebook is Building a Video Chat Device

Social media giant Facebook is working on a laptop-sized touchscreen" and be announced next year, according to a report from Bloomberg on Tuesday.

The device is being developed inside Facebook's secretive Building 8 hardware lab, which is tasked with creating consumer hardware and shipping it to millions of people.

This will come with a touchscreen measuring between 13" and 15" diagonally, and might run a version of Android. It will feature a wide-angle camera and AI-powered microphones and speakers. The device is said to be in testing at the moment, including "in people's homes", despite still being in the prototype phase.

Facebook is also working on an Amazon Echo-like smart speaker, per Bloomberg, echoing a recent report from Digitimes that said the speaker is on track to ship in early 2018.

Both devices will reportedly be powered by a Facebook voice assistant that functions similarly to Apple's Siri. The new devices represent a new phase in Facebook’s hardware ambitions.

Best Cheapest Data Plans For Smartphones & PC in August 2017

Data is life! You need more data on your phone more than you need more food in your stomach. I’m briefly going to share with you the best cheap data plans for the month of August 2017.

9Mobile: There has been a lot of controversy about 9mobile 4G network but the truth is, 4G LTE didn’t go home with Etisalat international, it is still very much available on our very own 9mobile.

They recently launched a Timely based data plan with fair usage policy attached, but I still think it’s for those who have something urgent to download.

Hidden Truth About 9Mobile Timely Based Data Plan

10min plan of N50 is capped at 230MB

15min plan of N70 is capped at 350MB

30min plan of N120 is capped at 780MB

1hour plan of N200 is capped at 1580MB (1.5GB)

It is not unlimited… I don’t know why 9mobile is hiding it.

To Subscribe to Any of The BlazeOn Timely Data Plan

From your Android device, text “blazeon” to 229 or just download & install the blaze on app.
Download Blaze On from Google Play Store here or download the raw file here

Set up the app and you are good to go.

Unfortunately, it’s only available for Android users.

9mobile still maintain the same old data plans; however, getting data as a normal user from third party vendor is the best.

You can get;

5GB for N2000

10GB for N3500

11GB for N3700

MTN: Made changes to some of their weekly and daily data plans. Now, you can get 50MBfor N100 instead of 30MB (before), and150MB for N200 instead of 100MB (before). These plans are all valid for 1 day.

Daily Plans

50MB For N100
Text 104 to 131

150MB for N200
Text 113 to 131

Weekly Plans

150MB for N300
Text 102 to 131

But for normal data plans, you can dial *131# to make your subscription. However, third party data reseller is still the best.

Here are the plans

1GB- for N500

2GB-for N1000

5GB-for N2300

10GB-for N4000

They are all valid for 3months. Chat the trusted seller 08135492059.

Glo: There has been an increase in speed on Glo network lately after the uncut bashing by fans on their Facebook page; they nicodemusly introduce Free data to subcribers which rewards customers with free 200MB whenever you are out of data.

Glo 0.0K with anonytun vpn is still working and the settings still remains the same.

Remember that Glo N1000 will give you 3.2GB when it auto renew; without auto renew, you get 1.6GB. Dial *777# to choose your preferred plan.

Airtel: Secrets talks is still ongoing that Bhartel want to acquire 9mobile; we’ll wait until its done. Meanwhile, Airtel introduce unlimited data plans for heavy users

So far so good, Airtel SmartTrybe is still the best for all Airtel users because the repackaged Smart Trybe gives 11k/sec rate to all networks in Nigeria and cheapest cost of data bundle.

It comes with 3 Exclusive packages which includes;

» Trybe Special Data: cheap data bundle and call rates which gives  you 1GB of data for N500 and it will last you for one week (7 days).
» Trybe Night Browsing:  You can get 500MB data for N25(12:00am – 5:00am),1.5GB for N200 (12:00am-5am), and the good aspect is that you can subscribe over and over again.
