Shocking!! OAU Students Express Concern About Increased Sickness On Campus
Students of one of Nigeria’s oldest universities, Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, have expressed concern about increased cases of illness among students.
A visit to the institution’s largest student hostel, Awolowo Hall, showed that many of the rooms had at least one student who had fallen ill. One of the rooms, which has 8 occupants, had five of them already fall ill this past week.
An average of five students stay in a room in the hostel officially although the figure is often up to a dozen due to the shortage of student accommodation.
The increased cases of illness has been attributed to the ‘harsh’ weather conditions while some students have attributed it to poor sanitary conditions of the hostels.
Some students also alleged that they were given expired drugs at the institutions health centre when they visited after they fell ill.
One of the students who just recovered from his illness, Adebayo Benjamin, said, “I was feeling dizzy, vomited , had high temperature and headache , I have not felt this way before.”
Another student, Abiodun of Management and Accounting department, said his illness prevented him from preparing for the university’s examination which begins early March.
A visit to the health centre of the institution also showed that an average of three doctors attended to the scores of students who thronged the hospital.
Some of the symptoms complained of by students include high temperature, vomiting, dizziness, stomach ache and headache.
One of the doctors on duty attributed the increased illness to the harsh weather and lack of rest by students. Other health workers, who confirmed the increase in number of students appearing at the centre, however. said the situations in the hostel may have made the conditions worse. The hospital’s Chief Medical Director was not on seat and could not be reached on phone.
Already, the university’s Association of Campus Journalists, ACJ, has blamed the hostel conditions for the illness.
“The drainages at the back of our hostels have not been cleaned for about one month thereby breeding mosquitoes that have spread the strange virus,” Omole Isaac, the ACJ spokesperson said in a statement. “Our advise to students is to keep their rooms clean as we have not witnessed this kind of development before.”
Some of the students, however, blamed their colleagues for the poor sanitary conditions of the hostels.
“The way hostel facilities are used by students can be annoying, little precautions need be taken although this strange fever is not controllable,” a student, Samuel Olatunde, said.
Another student, Awe Peter, asked the university management to ensure proper cleaning of the hostels.
The spokesperson of the university, Olanrewaju Abiodun, however allayed the students fears.
“There is no strange fever in Obafemi Awolowo University,” he told PREMIUM TIMES. “Most of these allegations are unfounded. In fact I have visited hostels and I saw students watching football. Are these the sick students? We have over thirty five thousand students in Obafemi Awolowo university and if some microscopic few are sick then why such panic.”
Mr. Abiodun hinted that some of the students might be stressed due to preparations for upcoming examination in the school.
“The Chief Medical Director has even said there is no strange virus in Obafemi Awolowo University. We are having normal examination tension, so all is well,” he said.The University Joint Christian Mission, UJCM, has fixed Monday for special prayers against the “strange” fever.

The car swerved towards the curvet along the ro and it was badly damaged at the front.

Unconfirmed reports reaching us reveals the son of the former President, Olusegun Obasanjo crashed car while traveling around the South-western part of Nigeria.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s son, Oba, was in a ghastly auto accident today on his way from Ilesha in Osun state where he had gone to attend the 75th birthday party ceremony of his stepmother, Mabel.
An eyewitness said the car he was driving is now a write-off with occupants including Oba sustaining critical injuries.
A family source told Saharareporters that Oba and others injured in the accident have been taken to the University teaching Hospital in Ibadan, Oyo state for treatment.

President Buhari Orders Investigation Into Benue Killings
President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered an investigation into the clashes between herdsmen and indigenes of communities in Benue State.
President Buhari who expressed deep shock at the latest incident during the past week, which led to hundreds of deaths in four communities in Agatu, Benue State, ordered security agencies to get to the root causes of the problem.
“We will conduct an investigation to know exactly what happened; the only way to bring an end to the violence once and for all is to look beyond one incident and ascertain exactly what factors are behind the conflicts,” he said.
He added that all Nigerians must learn to live together as one, in peace and unity.
“We are all one nation and one people,” he said. “There should not be any reason why Nigerians of any group or tongue cannot now reside with one another wherever they find themselves after decades of living together.”
The President further expressed condolences to the government and people of Benue State, particularly the people of the Agatu communities, assuring them that the government would do everything possible to ensure that no such incident ever occurred in their midst again.
“Once the investigations are concluded, we will act immediately to address the root of the problem,” he said.

Do you think Gov. Ayodele Fayose’s consistent criticism of President Muhammadu Buhari is right?
On the contrary, we respect elders in Yorubaland. It is in other places that some people think that all animals are equal, whereas in actual fact, not all animals are equal. In politics a young man can stand up to raise an issue, but I personally think that it is not right to abuse the President or to insult him.
You are insulting the whole nation, when you are insulting the president, or when you are abusing him, you are abusing the whole range of people who believe in him and put him there. I don’t think it is right for any governor or anybody at all to abuse the country and abuse the president.
You can make suggestion to him as to what you think should be done in certain areas, but nobody, either culturally and whichever consideration you put it, should abuse the President.
But we must respect those in higher authority, even if it is your opponent, you must try to respect and accommodate them. I don’t think it is right to abuse or make negative remarks about a well know leader. I don’t think it is proper.
Governor Fayose has been raising alarm for some time now that President Buhari is planning to use the outcome of the Military probe into the alleged partisanship of its officers in Ekiti 2014 governorship election to unseat him, do you think this fear has basis?
I learnt that the military disciplined their men as regard some misdemeanour, which means they must have got certain facts.
The only thing I feel is that if the Federal Government feels that the election had been wrongly interpreted to bring the wrong man here, they would start with the Independent National Electoral Commission, if INEC now admit that they use terrorism or oppression of somebody to declare the wrong candidate.
Or if they found a fault in the process, intimidation, oppression, can that be used as a basis for removing the Governor, would that be sufficient reason for removing him. Because he says they are threatening to remove him.
How are they going to remove him? Who will make pronouncement for his removal? Is it the court, the Federal Government or INEC? The fear of the Governor, would definitely create an atmosphere of fear for all the members of his Government. I think his fear is unfounded.

Fayose Condemns Buhari’s Silence On Killings By Herdsmen
The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has described as worrisome, the silence of President Mohammadu Buhari on the alleged killing of harmless Nigerians by Fulani herdsmen, saying; “wanton murder of over 300 Agatu people of Benue State and the silence of the Federal Government on this genocide is a clear invitation to chaos.”
The governor, who described activities of the Fulani herdsmen as inimical to the revival of agriculture in the country said; “Farmlands costing billions of naira have been destroyed in States in the South-West, South-East and North-Central zones of the country.
One wonders how Nigerians can go back to farming when those already in the farms are losing billions of naira worth of crops to destruction of their farmlands by the Fulani Herdsmen and the Federal Government is not doing anything about it.”
In a release issued on Sunday by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose, who expressed his sympathy with the victims and their families, added that the Federal Government must stop playing ostrich to the menace of the Fulani herdsmen.
“If in the last one week, over 300 Nigerians were allegedly killed, several villages razed, with farmlands destroyed by Fulani herdsmen and President Buhari is comfortable junketing from one country to the other, something is definitely wrong somewhere.
“This is because in saner climes, no country will have over 300 of its citizens reportedly killed with thousands others displaced and the leader of such country will not rush home from wherever he is to take charge of the situation by himself,” the governor said.
He said President Buhari must be reminded how he led a delegation of Arewa leaders to Ibadan on October 13, 2000, to confront the then Governor of Oyo State, Late Alhaji Lam Adesina over alleged killing of Fulani herdsmen in Saki, Oke Ogun Area of the state.
The Governor asked; “If 16 years ago, President Buhari could be so concerned about the killing of Fulani Herdsmen in Oyo State such that he, as a private citizen led Arewa leaders to Ibadan to show their anger, why is the President silent now that Fulani Herdsmen are the ones allegedly killing people, raping women and destroying farmlands in Benue State in particular and other States in the country?
“Is the President unmindful of the possibility of Nigerians seeing his silence as conspiracy?
“Most importantly, what has Boko Haram caused Nigeria that the Fulani herdsmen are not also causing now?”
While challenging the umbrella body of cattle breeders, the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in particular and Northern leaders in general to wade into the persistent involvement of herdsmen in attack on communities, killing and raping of Nigerians, Governor Fayose said; “Nigeria is still battling Boko Haram and the country cannot afford another regime of anarchy, which this persistent killing of Nigerians by the Fulani Herdsmen can cause.”

Teenage Chukwuka Noah, who was installed Obi (king) Akaeze I of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State after the murder of his father, tells NOSA AKENZUA how he plans to rule the kingdom
When exactly did you know that you would succeed your father as the king of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom?
Kingship is not like chieftaincy titles, it is ordained by the Almighty God. The time I would succeed my father, Obi Akaeze Edward Ofolue III, was not known to me until the unfortunate incident in which he was kidnapped and then murdered by gunmen in January.
The subsequent ascension of my father’s throne was a decision from God and I appreciate Him for the decision.
Are you not afraid of suffering a similar fate?
My father’s death was shocking and I pray such will come my way. The Almighty God will protect me and the people of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom. My father’s killing was shocking and I still ask why his killers were so heartless to him. I seek protection from the Almighty God and I am sure that He will protect me.
How did your mother and siblings prepare for your ascension to the throne?
With the support of God Almighty, my family members did their best. A lot of them also ensured that they embraced peace and joy for me to be on the throne.
Do your schoolmates and friends still relate with you the same way they did before you became king?
My relationship with my friends and schoolmates still remain the same. They are still my friends and schoolmates.
The only difference now is that I am a king by the divine grace of God. They are aware of the present position of things and also know the honour a king deserves.
How do your family members relate with you now that you have become king?
They are my people and they relate with me well and as a king. I owe them a duty to recognise that they are my family members and as well, they know I am a king.
What would you miss most about your life now that you are a king?
Thank you. I am a very reserved person. I also have an unshaken belief and trust in God. I worship Him in reverence too.
Now that I am a king, I will miss relating with my peer group in the open as I used to do in the United Kingdom.
I used to visit my friends at will. I will also miss that. Notwithstanding, I intend to ask more questions, listen to my people and strive hard to better their lives. I will ensure I am better guided in order to give the best of my capacity.
Have you decided when to marry?
Well, things will follow one thing at a time. For now, my focus is on my studies in the United Kingdom. I am going to ask God to lead me when I want to do that.
Who are your role models?
My first role model is the Almighty God. Then, I see my parents as my guardian angels.
Why are they your role models?
I choose God first as my role model because He is the giver of life. He is the one that determines everything in life. For my parents, it is because of their honest and reserved nature and for being able to distinguish themselves from others.
What kind of legacy would you like to leave behind?
I will leave that for Almighty God to help me to achieve. I cannot do anything without His power and guidance.
But as a desire, I honestly would want to be remembered as the best king who ruled his people with prosperity, fear of God and love.
What is your message to the people of your kingdom?
Well, considering the heart-rending incident in which my beloved father lost his life, I will try to take everything slowly.
I will also want them to know that God is with our land. I am certain that God is with the people of Ubulu-Uku who are my wonderful people.
God will continue to protect them and lead them right. He will grant them mercies and bless them with His uncommon grace to succeed.
I will carry on during this difficult period and protect the good people of Ubulu-Uku by seeking God’s intervention to lead me well.
I pray that God will never leave the people of Ubulu-Uku. He will give them the grace to succeed in the name of Jesus.
What is your real age?
I am 17 years old and not 15 years as widely stated.
What career do you intend to choose?
I had wanted to be a medical doctor but the unfortunate incident that led to the death of my father changed the process.
When it was announced that my father had been killed, I had no choice than to heed the call to succeed him.
It is painful that my father passed on in an inexplicable circumstance. But to the glory of God, I have succeeded him in ruling the Ubulu-Uku kingdom.
What do you think is going to happen to your studies now?
I am going back to the UK to continue my studies. My uncle has been appointed to stand in for me as the regent till I return.
It is really historic for the people of Ubulu-Uku who I hold in trust as my people and I ask the Almighty God to see me through the period of my studies.
I promise to do the will of my people. I also ask the Almighty God to support me and bless the people of Ubulu-Uku beyond their expectations. I also beseech Him to bless the Kingdom and make my reign peaceful.

We’re In Nigeria For Money – Nigerians Arrested For Robbery (Photo)
Five Niger Republic nationals arrested for armed robbery have told police detectives that they came to Nigeria to make money.
The suspects, Mustapha Musa (21), Abdulahi Ali (21), Saidi Isa (21), Ali Alisuma (22), Yakubu Adamu (22) and Isiaka Yakubu (23), were arrested by police patrol team at Tinubu on Lagos Island.
It was gathered that the suspects were all working as porters at Balogun Market before they met one Isa Musa from Borno State who introduced them to robbery.
But Musa said he met the men at Obalende when they asked him to take them somewhere. He said: “I have spent about 15 years in Lagos. I was once a motorcycle rider.
But my motorcycle was impounded about five times by the police that was why I bought a Toyata Sunny car which I used for transportation.
“The boys have been into the robbery before I met them. I joined them about two months ago. I have also shared about N140,000 from the proceeds from the two the operations he went for. Our major target is warehouse.
Our last operation was at Mandilas Mall before we were arrested by the police.”
The gang leader, Alisuma, said he used to call Musa on the phone whenever his members wanted to go for any operation.
He said: “Whenever we went on operation, my own work was to use sledge hammer and other tools to break doors, while my colleagues who were armed with machetes would go in and steel money and some other valuables.
We have robbed at Mandilas Mall and one other warehouse at Tinubu area of the Island. I also used to instruct my members on what to do because they do not understand the Island routes very well.
“I came to Nigeria to work but because my expectation was not met by working as a porter at Idumota, my colleagues and I decided to go into robbery so as to be able to send money back home.
Our parents believe there is money in Nigeria that was why they are expecting much from anyone of us who come to Nigeria.”

The Peoples Democratic Party’s National Chairman, Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff, yesterday revealed that he has started reaching out to those who defected from the party to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
The former governor of Borno State, however, refused to say if he had also met with the President of the Senate, Sen. Bukola Saraki on whether the latter would return to the PDP or not.
Speaking through his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Inuwa Bwala in Abuja, Sheriff said the alleged panic in the camp of the ruling party was responsible for the dispute that greeted his appointment.
According to Sheriff, the leadership of the ruling party is aware of his capability to unite the members of the PDP and also bring back those who defected to the APC, hence the controversy.
“We have started reaching out to those who left the PDP and we are discussing already.
“We are getting positive results from them, but we won’t go to the pages of newspapers to announce their names.
“The APC and its leadership are aware that Sheriff has the ability to unite the members of the PDP and also bring back those who have left the party.
“This was why we had the initial controversy on the appointment. But now, we have thrown that behind us as we have resumed work fully,” Bwala said

According to our source who pleaded anonymous, the carpenter turned thief sat at the entrance of the estate with a sharp cutlass, waiting for residents on foot to pass. It wasn’t too long before a lady in her early 20’s walked by and as expected, he attacked her with the cutlass and collected her bag
Unfortunately for him, the lady shouted “ole, ole, ole(thief, thief, thief) as he dashed away with her bag, her voice echoed a conscious alarm to other residents of the estate which alerted them to a very hot chase
He was caught and was almost lynched by the grieving community who has suffered a great deal of pain from armed robbers in the past… Armed robber arrested with cutlass in ikorodu by community Asked if he was “Baddo”, one of the most dreadful criminal in the area who is known to rub oil on his body to avoid being grabbed by the hands while tearing nets, he said no and this was his first time.
The source who took a very deep look at the man noted that it could be however be the crash of Naira that has made the transition from a carpenter to a loop daredevil armed robber.

Boko Haram: Army Re-Opens Borno Highways Three Years After Closure
The Nigerian Army announced on Saturday it had re-opened all major highways linking Maiduguri, Borno State with other parts of the country after being shut for about three years due to suspected Boko Haram terrorist attacks.
Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, the Chief of Army Staff, announced this at the launch of Army Combat Motor Bikes in Damboa, headquarters of Damboa Local Government Area of the state.
Buratai said the Army will work towards securing the lives and properties of motorists plying the roads.
He said: “From today the roads – Maiduguri-Damboa and Damboa-Biu Highway – will be opened.
“The road is going to be entrusted into the hands of the Brigade Commander of the 25 Task Force Brigade.
“I do not want to hear any case of attack on innocent civilians or motorists on the road henceforth.
“Our troops will be on alert 24 hours to ensure that the road is kept open.”
Buratai said the Nigerian Army had also re-opened other highways, including the Maiduguri-Bama and Maiduguri-Mafa-Dikwa-Gamboru/Ngala roads.
He added: “All other major roads have been re-opened to motorists in the state.
“We are deliberate in ensuring that the roads are opened and the people that ply the roads and indeed the residents are safe.
“Those who left should come back.
“I know that the Borno State Government is doing something and the Federal Government is doing something too on the issue.”
Buratai explained that the launch of the Motor Bikes was aimed at beefing up security on the highways to prevent attacks on innocent persons.
He said: “I am here to formally launch the Motor Bike Battalion of the Nigerian Army.
“We see it as a first multiplier to the fight against the Boko Haram terrorists.
“We intend to use the Motor Bikes effectively to ensure that our roads are kept safe and the terrorists are pursued anywhere they go.”
Buratai added that the Motor Bikes were fitted with fire power and communication gadget for effectiveness.
He said: “This is a first multiplier with added fire power with the speed as well as the communication that is being added to the bikes.
“The reach of these Motor Bikes will be a very important element in ensuring that our troops maintain the initiatives and continue the exploit what they have so far achieved.
“So as the roads are re-opened now, people should be able to move freely and we will do our job to ensure that they are secured.”
Buratai also launched the posters of the second batch of the Boko Haram most wanted terrorists.
He said: “We are also launching the second batch of Boko Haram most wanted terrorists on our list.
“The choice of Damboa is not by accident.
“It is deliberate knowing the centrality of Damboa in this operation.
“The vigilantes here will play important role in identifying these terrorists.
“We will send the posters across the country to ensure that those that have run away will be fished out.
“We call on the public to look at the posters carefully, identify and report any person they can recognise and report accordingly.
“We want to appreciate the support of the public, indeed all Nigerians, because we received tremendous support in the first set of 100 pictures and many of them had been identified and arrested.
“Although we are still pursing some of them, we call on all Nigerians to support us by identifying these terrorists on these posters.”
