UNILAG SUG President Arrested As Students Vacate School After Total Shutdown (Photos)

university-of-lagos-1
Following an order by the authorities of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) closing down the campus earlier today, students are now vacating the campus.
President of the Student Union Government (SUG) of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Mohammed Olaniyan, has been reportedly arrested on Thursday by security operatives following the protest by students.
The school’s management issued a directive that all students vacate the halls of residence before 10:00am on Friday. However, the students decided to disregard the directive with the student union locking the halls of residence, thus preventing the exit of any student.
They clamoured for the presence of Olaniyan whom they referred to as their ‘school father’, as they waited till 9:30pm on Thursday for Rahmon Ade Bello, vice chancellor of the university, to address them, but the address didn’t happen.

Vehicles of the Lagos state Rapid Response Squad were at the university premises but no other arrest was made. Olaniyan himself was released after a few hours as the opinion of some students of the university is that the management wants to push them to violence.
Meanwhile, following an order by the authorities of the school closing down the campus earlier today, students are now vacating the campus as the gate of the university has been taken over by heavily armed policemen, who are supervising the students’ movement out of the campus.
It can be recalled that UNILAG’s management ordered the indefinite closure of the school earlier today, stating that students’ protest border on a national situation which the management cannot address internally. The administration added that the school will reopen once fuel scarcity situation becomes normal in Nigeria.

Gionee P5 Mini: The Specs of Elegance

The excitement that lit her face when I gave her the package was nothing compared to the exhilaration when she unwrapped it. Even though she had tried to hide it from me, I knew she really needed a phone and so I got one. I watched, a little proud of myself as she inspected the gift. She couldn’t hide the feeling.

Gionee P5 Mini: The Specs of Elegance

I could relate. The first shock that hits you when you hold the Gionee P5 Mini in your hands is its semblance with the seeming images in previews that seemed out of this world.

The stylish curves of metal and glass create a perfect symmetry within the ambit of 132mm by 66mm and 9.1mm. I had chosen the white one, it was her best colour and it added a purity that you could feel.

She said that she loved me, that she was very grateful, I smiled. “It seemed like a small phone but by many standards, the P5mini is spectacular.”

“Tell me about it” she requested

“Its 4.5-inch screen may not be too much when you are talking about quantity but it is brandished with the latest technology on touch screen (on-cell) and display (in-plane switching). The on-cell is a touch screen technology that reduces the thickness of display by placing the sensor directly on the lenses. The in-plane switching ensures the clean and sharp display from whatever angle the screen is viewed.”

She looked at me and urged me to go on.

The Gionee P5 Mini employs the DTS technology to bring users an unforgettable experience of sound and music. It has a volume strengthening mode which takes the volume of the phone speakers beyond its limits and above the last crank, to deliver a valuable extra. It has a shake-and-change-the-music-feature that works.”

With that, she picked up the phone as if to check the things that I was saying. I let her. Then she took a picture of me. I didn’t see it coming.

Gionee P5 Mini: Made of Tech and Beauty

“This is quite clear!” She was surprised. “The camera is so clear.”

“Is it?” I asked and continued “With a 5 megapixel rear camera and a 2 megapixel front camera, the Gionee P5 Mini does way better than other phones within this range. From the automatic face beauty that operates in its selfie camera to the automatic LED flash that is attached to the rear camera.”

She took one or two selfies and then her facial expression nudged me to go on.

“With four processors (quad core), multitasking is the new normal. The fully charged battery of the Gionee P5 Mini can hold up to 1800 (mAh) milliampere hour of charge. Combined with a lot of smart power management options, you can always be in power especially on the “extreme mode” where power consumption comes close to a standstill while keeping only the vitals of calls, message, clock and contacts alive.”

“I love the phone and I love you.”

Launched only last week, Gionee’s newest phone model, the P5mini is already making a name for itself and gathering momentum in all the spaces where phones play.

An excellent combination of technology and elegance, the P5 Mini can be as flashy as it can be discrete, as loud as it can be silent; deliberately designed to fit occasions and it is available at Konga. Check Here

Meet the stunning modular LG G5

lg g5 modular
Many of you tech inclined folks will know about Project Ara which was started by Motorola Mobility to make a modular phone, Well LG has succeeded in making something modular even though it might not be as modular as we want.
Just like most top smartphone manufacturers, LG has dumped plastic parts in the G5. The phone has a complete metal body with a snap-to-open design. The LG G5’s bottom is removable thereby making it modular. This was achieved by putting a USB-C connection in the phone which allows it offer new bottoms with new features.
In order to swap the modules, you simply press a special button on the side, slide the module out, remove the main battery and put the battery into a new module which according to people who have done it is very easy. The phone is only partially modular as the processor cannot be replaced but a lot of other parts can be added like another camera, SSD, battery and other stuff.

LG G5 Design

lg g5 always on
Lets move away from the modularity and get to the details. The G5 is a slim attractive beauty which is slightly heavier than the LG G4. It sports a 5.3-inch (2,560 x 1,440 pixels) IPS LCD display which is “always on,” which means it always shows the date, time and notifications just like the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. The phone uses a special selective OLED light to light up only the needed part of the screen thereby conserving battery life, according to LG, the display only consumes about 1 percent of the battery every hour.

LG G5 Features

  • Fingerprint scanner on the back like theLG G4
  • Volume buttons are now on the side
  • Dual rear cameras: A standard 16 MP shooter and a wide-angle 8 MP unit which can be switched using the camera app.

LG G5 Specifications

The phone runs Android Marshmallow v6.0 on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor and has 4GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot. LG has removed Android’s app drawer which makes the G5 have a single-level experience like on the iPhone and Huawei phones and this means you can install another launcher.

Release Date and Price in Nigeria

LG has said that the phone will be released in April but has not stated the price. I however estimate that it will cost about 150,000 Naira – 160,000 Naira in Nigeria.

Alcatel unveils high end Idol 4 and 4S flagships

alcatel idol 4 and 4s
Alcatel is a pretty new face in the smartphone industry and they started out with budget phones such as the Alcatel Pop Star however they have decided to go big with the new Alcatel Idol 4 series announced during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last month.  Alcatel has dropped Onetouch from its name and has also changed its logo.
The Alcatel Idol 4 and 4S are very impressive with their solid metal and glass build, dual front and rear JBL speakers and a Virtual Reality (VR) feature. Even though their specs are not as impressive as top flagships such as the Samsung Galaxy S7 or the LG G5, they offer some very cool features.

Alcatel Idol 4 Design

The Idol 4 is smaller than the Idol 4S but both have the same build quality with a beautiful metal frame holding glass front and back covers.  It sports a 5.2 inch FHD (1920×1980 pixels) InPlane switching touchscreen display and runs on Android OS Marshmallow v6.0 on a 1.7GHz Snapdragon 617 octa-core processor with 3GB of RAM.

Alcatel Idol 4 Specifications

It has a 13 MP rear camera which can record with 1080p quality and an 8 MP front camera with flash. It has 16 GB internal memory with 10GB available to the user, there’s also a microSD slot with 512 GB capacity.  Additionally it has 4G LTE, dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC, quick charging (one hour to full), and Bluetooth 4.2. It uses a 2,610mAh battery which is just okay.

Alcatel Idol 4S Design

The Alcatel Idol 4S is both bigger and more powerful than its counterpart Idol 4. As mentioned earlier, they basically have the same design except that the display is larger at 5.5 inches(2560×1440 pixels) and uses a Quad HD AMOLED technology It also has a better 1.8GHz Snapdragon 652 octa-core processor with 3GB of RAM. Also it has a much bigger 3,000mAh battery.

Alcatel Idol 4S Camera

The rear camera is bigger at 16 MP while the front camera is the same as the Idol 4 at 8 MP with front flash and wide angle lens.  The camera can shoot 2K quality HD videos at 30 fps.

Alcatel Idol 4S Specs

The phone has 32GB internal storage with 25 GB available and a microSD card with 512 GB capacity. For connectivity, Alcatel Idol 4S has 4G LTE, dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth 4.2, and quick charging (about 1.5 hours).

Alcatel Idol 4 and 4S shared special features

  • Both have dual front- and rear-facing speakers.
  • Hi-Fi surround sound headsets (JBL earphones are in the package).
  • Alcatel is bringing Virtual Reality into their phones as the packaging of the Idol 4 and 4S is made to be able to transform into a pair of Google Cardboard-style Virtual Reality goggles. The phones have a VR launcher and some pre-loaded VR games and apps.
  • Boom Key: The boom key is a physical button which does different tasks depending on what you are using the phone to do at that time. While using the camera, pressing this button will make the camera take an instant shot. If pressed during a call, it will increase the call volume, etc

Release Date

Alcatel is planning to release both phones in 50 countries in the next three months and start shipping by April. Both phones will be available in Gold, Dark Gray, Rose Gold, and Metal Silver colors.

Alcatel 4 and 4S Price in Nigeria

There are four different variants of the phone and their prices are expected to range from 120,000 Naira to 180,000 Naira.

Bitcoin in Nigeria and How to Make Money With It

What is Bitcoin?

A lot of people myself included have heard about bitcoin in the past but hardly know what exactly it is and how to use it to make money. Bitcoin in layman’s terms is simply “digital money” which means it cannot be seen, touched, smelled or felt but it can be used to purchase things online just like you do with your internet banking enabled ATM cards such as Mastercard, Visacard, etc. It can also be used offline is some shops which have it enabled as a means of payment although I don’t think we have any such shops in Nigeria.
Bitcoin is used mainly by some people, companies and websites in the more developed parts of the world such as Europe and North America, we Africans have not really got the hang of it yet. Companies such as Namecheap, WordPress and Reddit have adopted it and a lot of top tech guys feel it is the future of internet payments. Stats fromBitcoincharts.com show that at the end of 2013, over 1.5 billion US dollars worth of bitcoin were in circulation worldwide.

Who created Bitcoin?

According to Bitcoin.org, the first idea for a currency like bitcoin was proposed by Wei Dai in 1998 with the concept called “cryptocurrency” which literally means “secret currency” but can be interpreted as “secure currency” and it was so named because it uses cryptography for its creation and controlling financial transactions. Bitcoin’s first specifications and proof of concept were published by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2009 and as such many regard him as the creator of Bitcoin.

Who owns Bitcoin?

Well this is a tricky one, nobody owns Bitcoin. Bitcoin is an open source platform with no central authority, the Bitcoin software and protocol can be edited by anydeveloper (programmer) in the world but the edit must be reviewed and accepted by many other developers before it is accepted.
Now you might wonder who controls the Bitcoin platform; it is controlled by all Bitcoin users in the world who all have to use Bitcoin software which adhere to the defined protocols of Bitcoin.

How does it work?

To begin, you need to download and install a Bitcoin mobile or computer app which will provide you with a Bitcoin Wallet similar to Google Wallet, etc and that wallet allows you send and receive bitcoins.

Is it secure?

Yes it is pretty air tight due to very high security measures and very recent technology but that is not to say it cannot be hacked, I doubt if anything digital can’t be.

How do you make money through Bitcoin?

bitcoin
There are two ways you can do this:
    1. Through speculative buying and selling: Bitcoin is a universal currency which means anybody in the world can (they may choose not to) buy or sell it. Bitcoin’s value as at 7th April 2016 was 1 Bitcoin equal to 421.64 US Dollars which is 83,000 Naira at the official CBN dollar to Naira rate of 197 Naira or 135,000 naira at the current parallel market rate of 320 Naira to a dollar.
Just like people trade forex by speculating that some currencies will rise, you can also speculate with Bitcoin because the value increases or decreases with certain trends and events. For example, people who bought bitcoins when it was just invented in 2009 bought 1 bitcoin for just 6 dollars, its value rose to a peak of about 1100 dollars in 2014 then took a nose-dive to less than 300 dollars in 2015 and started rising again as seen in the graph above.
  1. By mining for Bitcoins: This is a process where you use your computer and special Bitcoin mining hardware and software to compete with several other miners to solve some very complex mathematical problems which are used to serve as protection for Bitcoin transactions. If you get lucky and your hardware cracks a problem, you will be rewarded with some bitcoins usually about 25 bitcoins per calculation, you can also form or join groups of people to mine in a pool and then share the bounty according to each team member’s contribution.

Should you deal in Bitcoin?

Well, I will speak for myself, I believe Bitcoin is still in its early stages and you need a great deal of understanding of how it works before you invest in it except you have lots of cash you don’t mind losing but that doesn’t mean you should write it off completely, there are people making big bucks through it. I know that there are some Nigerians dealing in Bitcoin, you guys should tell us your success and/or failure stories.
You can learn more about Bitcoin at www.bitcoin.org

Turn a photo into a euphoric sensual artwork

Inject a depth of emotion into simple photography.

It doesn’t take a wealth of graphic complexity to produce an image charged with meaning. In this design, self-employed artist Tom Starley uses basic colours, shapes and brush strokes to create a well balanced, euphoric image with a hint of the fetal about it. This isn’t a technically complex piece – the original photograph does most of the work, but its graphic accessories enhance the emotion that is hinted at in the original.
The techniques in this tutorial will teach you how to subtly use Overlay effects and Selective Color to change the mood of your image. You’ll also learn how to place shapes to aid visual abstract design, how to use brushes to aid movement through the composition, and how to add depth to the foreground. We’ll also throw in a great trick to mask hair.

Time to complete

2-3 hours

Software

Adobe Photoshop CS4 or later

Project Files

Please visit the desktop site to download the project files.

STEP 1

First off, download the In The Moment brush set from the project files and double-click to install it.
You’ll need a model shot, preferably one with a limited tonal palette. I’ve gone with a nude from iStock.

STEP 2

Double-click the photo to unlock it. In Photoshop, create a new layer beneath it. Fill this layer with white. Simple.

STEP 3

Now we are going to cut out our model and paste her onto a new layer but also keep her background beneath. Select the photo, zoom in (Cmd/Ctrl+) to 300% then hit (P) to select the Pen tool. Carefully create a path around the woman, ignoring any wayward strands of hair – be ruthless, as we will add them back in later.

STEP 4

Once you’ve created a path around the woman, Right-click in the middle of her, then choose Make Selection. Hit OK. This separates the two images. Hold Cmd/Ctrl + X to cut, andCmd/Ctrl + V to paste into a new layer. Reduce the opacity of the photo background to 64%.

STEP 5

Now we can add any hairs back to the model’s head. Turn off all layers except for our cut-out model. Select the Smudge tool, use brush sizes 1 or 2, set the strength to 95% and select Sample All Layers in the Options bar.

STEP 6

Re-draw the strands of hair that couldn’t be cut out with the Pen tool. Going with the flow of her hair, flick your mouse or pen across the severed tips to re-draw hairs (the more the better). Once this is done, turn the other layers back on.

STEP 7

Next we’re going to add colour to the design using the Overlay Blend Mode – select this either in the Layers palette drop-down menu or by going to Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options. Create a new layer, fill it with yellow (#ffff0), reduce the opacity to 16% and set the Blend Mode to Overlay. Mmm, yellowy.

STEP 8

Create a new layer and use the Brush tool to softly scatter pink (#ffe02b1) around the image. Reduce the opacity to 37% and set Blend Mode to Overlay. Repeat the above process over the model’s body with a blood red, adjusting the opacity accordingly. Set to Overlay. Group these layers and keep them at the top of your document.

STEP 9

Now we’ve set the scene and added the colour overlays, we can start to add the abstract brushes and shapes to the design. Instead of giving you precise instructions as to where to place these effects, the following steps and tips will give you the basis from which to work using your own artistic licence.

STEP 10

Locate one of the paint splatter brushes provided in our download. Create a new layer above the model and add a couple of splatters around her back. I’ve used white for this but you can use any colour you like.

STEP 11

Using the brushes provided, place more splatters and shapes around the model in an aesthetically pleasing way. Alter their colour, duplicate or rotate them, or warp the applied brush to make the shapes fit the contours of the model’s body. Make sure you create a new layer for each brush as this will give you total control. It also allows you to remove any brush layer later on.

STEP 12

Now add a layer under the model and repeat the above, experimenting with the brushes provided. Try not to go over the top with effects, less is more. The main point of focus is the model, so make sure your effects don’t drown her out. Don’t worry about getting an exact likeness to my example, just experiment and have fun.

STEP 13

If you’re not happy, stop. Take a break, have a think, come back to the piece later and experiment with it until you are. I find listening to relaxing music helps me get in the right frame of mind. Try and make your brushwork fluid, as if it’s really there in the image.

STEP 14

Now you’ve added the colour and the shapes, we can create the orbs of light that look like lens flare. Create a new layer above the model and set its Blend Mode to Overlay. Locate one of the orb brushes, set the size quite large, then just flick the brush around the page.

STEP 15

Repeat the above with a smaller size brush. This is very simple yet effective and is a great brush for adding depth to an image. A lot of effects like this are very easy to apply, but add so much to the design.

STEP 16

So you’ve added everything now and it’s looking great, but you want the image to pop just that little bit more. You may be thinking that the colours could be brighter or some don’t work at all. In this case, navigate to the Adjustment Layer panel and at the top of your stack, add a Selective Color layer (Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Selective Color).

STEP 17

Set the Selective Color layer to work on all the layers beneath it. This allows you to alter each colour in your design easily – go through all the options and adjust them until you get the look you want. Then you’re done. Export and send the image to everyone you know (including me), upload it to a website, or send it in to Digital Arts.

Whatsapp Is Now Entirely End-to-end Encrypted

Communications on WhatsApp are now fully end-to-end encrypted, the company announced today, completing an integration that has lasted for nearly a year and a half. The company began rolling out encrypting text messages in November 2014, as part of a partnership with Open Whisper Systems, but those protections now extend to voice calls, video, and multi-party chat rooms, for users on both iOS and Android.
Deploying universal encryption allows for a number of new protections. Once communications with a user are encrypted, the WhatsApp client will now notify the user and refuse to send any unencrypted messages, addressing previous concerns that the system might be vulnerable to a downgrade attack.
It’s still hard to say for sure that WhatsApp is entirely immune to warrant requests. New attacks and vulnerabilities are common in the security world, and governments have been known to purchase and stockpile such attacks for law enforcement purposes. WhatsApp’s system still manages messages centrally, coordinates key exchanges, and has significant control over the code that runs on both servers and phones, so any attacker with WhatsApp’s cooperation would be well-placed to execute any newly devised attacks. Still, such an attack would likely require extraordinary cooperation from WhatsApp, akin to the measures demanded in Apple’s San Bernardino case, measures that would be vigorously resisted in courts and elsewhere.
The result is strong security for WhatsApp users, and potentially a template that could be applied to other services going forward. Open Whisper’s protocol is open source, and the group has pledged to help other messenger services employ the same protections going forward. “Over a billion monthly active users across the world are now using the Signal Protocol for end to end encryption,” Open Whisper wrote in its blog post announcing the change. “Over the next year, we will continue to work with additional messengers to amplify the impact and scope of private communication even further.”
