Alcatel is a pretty new face in the smartphone industry and they started out with budget phones such as the Alcatel Pop Star however they have decided to go big with the new Alcatel Idol 4 series announced during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last month. Alcatel has dropped Onetouch from its name and has also changed its logo.
The Alcatel Idol 4 and 4S are very impressive with their solid metal and glass build, dual front and rear JBL speakers and a Virtual Reality (VR) feature. Even though their specs are not as impressive as top flagships such as the Samsung Galaxy S7 or the LG G5, they offer some very cool features.
Alcatel Idol 4 Design
The Idol 4 is smaller than the Idol 4S but both have the same build quality with a beautiful metal frame holding glass front and back covers. It sports a 5.2 inch FHD (1920×1980 pixels) InPlane switching touchscreen display and runs on Android OS Marshmallow v6.0 on a 1.7GHz Snapdragon 617 octa-core processor with 3GB of RAM.
Alcatel Idol 4 Specifications
It has a 13 MP rear camera which can record with 1080p quality and an 8 MP front camera with flash. It has 16 GB internal memory with 10GB available to the user, there’s also a microSD slot with 512 GB capacity. Additionally it has 4G LTE, dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC, quick charging (one hour to full), and Bluetooth 4.2. It uses a 2,610mAh battery which is just okay.
Alcatel Idol 4S Design
The Alcatel Idol 4S is both bigger and more powerful than its counterpart Idol 4. As mentioned earlier, they basically have the same design except that the display is larger at 5.5 inches(2560×1440 pixels) and uses a Quad HD AMOLED technology It also has a better 1.8GHz Snapdragon 652 octa-core processor with 3GB of RAM. Also it has a much bigger 3,000mAh battery.
Alcatel Idol 4S Camera
The rear camera is bigger at 16 MP while the front camera is the same as the Idol 4 at 8 MP with front flash and wide angle lens. The camera can shoot 2K quality HD videos at 30 fps.
Alcatel Idol 4S Specs
The phone has 32GB internal storage with 25 GB available and a microSD card with 512 GB capacity. For connectivity, Alcatel Idol 4S has 4G LTE, dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth 4.2, and quick charging (about 1.5 hours).
Alcatel Idol 4 and 4S shared special features
- Both have dual front- and rear-facing speakers.
- Hi-Fi surround sound headsets (JBL earphones are in the package).
- Alcatel is bringing Virtual Reality into their phones as the packaging of the Idol 4 and 4S is made to be able to transform into a pair of Google Cardboard-style Virtual Reality goggles. The phones have a VR launcher and some pre-loaded VR games and apps.
- Boom Key: The boom key is a physical button which does different tasks depending on what you are using the phone to do at that time. While using the camera, pressing this button will make the camera take an instant shot. If pressed during a call, it will increase the call volume, etc
Release Date
Alcatel is planning to release both phones in 50 countries in the next three months and start shipping by April. Both phones will be available in Gold, Dark Gray, Rose Gold, and Metal Silver colors.
Alcatel 4 and 4S Price in Nigeria
There are four different variants of the phone and their prices are expected to range from 120,000 Naira to 180,000 Naira.
