Reps investigate alleged forced marriage of 14-year-old girl

Habiba Isa. Photo: Olaide Oyelude

John Ameh, Abuja

The House of Representatives on Tuesday resolved to investigate the reported abduction and forceful marriage of a 14-year-old girl, Habiba Isa.

The marriage, which received the support of the Katsina State Emirate Council, has come under criticism in the past week.

She was said to have been first abducted and converted from Christianity to Islam before the forced marriage took place.

The teenager was married to an aide in the Emir’s palace.

After adopting a motion by Mr. Nnana Igbokwe on Tuesday, the House directed its Committee on Women Affairs to investigate the allegation.

Igbokwe informed the House that the marriage was without the consent of the parents of the girl.

He added that when the parents tried to secure her freedom, they were threatened and harassed repeatedly in Katsina State.

Igbokwe argued that under the Child’s Rights Act, it was an offence to take a child from the custody of the parents without the consent of the latter.

He stated, “Section 21 of the Child’s Rights Act stipulates that no person shall remove or take a child out of the custody or protection of his father or mother or guardian against the will of the father, mother or guardian.”

Igbokwe also reminded his colleagues that under the Act, “any marriage so contracted is null and void and of no effect whatsoever.”

Lawmakers passed the resolution in a unanimous voice vote.

Saudi Arabia executes prince for murder

Saudi Arabia's King Salman

A prince from the Saudi royal family was executed on Tuesday for murdering a man during a brawl in the capital Riyadh, the Interior Ministry announced.
The execution of Prince Turki Saud-al-Kabir is an extremely rare case of a member of the conservative kingdom’s ruling family being put to death.

The Interior Ministry stated that “in announcing this, we want to affirm to all that the Kingdom’s government is determined to establish security.
“It will bring about justice and implement God’s law against all those who attack the innocent.”
Meanwhile, local media reported that the killing for which the prince was executed took place in 2012.
The media indicated that Prince Turki’s death sentence was upheld by the Appeal Court and the High Court.

Another royal prince welcomed the news, in the first public reaction from a member of the ruling family.
Prince Khaled Al Saud said “this is God’s law, and the way of our blessed kingdom. May God have mercy on the killer and his victim.”
A report says the execution brings to 128 the number of persons put to death so far in the country this year.

Saudi Arabia, which applies strict interpretation of Islamic law, is among the top executioners in the world, according to international rights groups.

On Jan. 2, authorities beheaded 47 people, including a prominent Shiite cleric, on terrorism-related charges, leading to furious protests from regional rival Iran and criticisms from rights groups.

Saudi Arabia imposes the death penalty for offences including murder, armed robbery, banditry, rape, drug-trafficking and witchcraft.

PDP condemns arrest of Fani-Kayode’s wife

Femi Fani-Kayode

Olusola Fabiyi, Abuja

The Peoples Democratic Party has condemned the arrest of Precious, the wife of Femi Fani-Kayode and their eight-month old son, Aragorn.
It said the arrest represented what it called  a new low in the Federal Government’s resolve to harass and persecute real and perceived enemies of the Buhari administration under the guise of an anti-corruption crusade.
Spokesperson for the PDP, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, stated this in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday.
The statement said, “We condemn, in its entirety, the arrest and detention of Precious, wife of Chief Femi Fani-Kayode – former Spokesperson of the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation on October 17, by officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Ado-Ekiti.”
They were however released following the intervention of Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State.
Adeyeye said, “This action represents a new low in the Federal Government’s resolve to harass and persecute real and perceived enemies of the Buhari administration under the guise of an anti-corruption crusade.
“It is reprehensible for the government to attack members of the families of its perceived enemies, especially wives and children, for any reason whatsoever.
“In addition to freezing Chief Fani-Kayode’s accounts, the Federal Government has ordered the freezing of accounts of his wife, Precious Chikwendu, several of which were opened and operated long before their marriage.
“These accounts have been frozen for no reason other than her marriage to Chief Fani-Kayode.”
Adeyeye said the Buhari administration cannot, and must not, be allowed to continue the alleged violation of the constitutional rights and freedoms of the Nigerian people.
According to him, “This sort of tyranny must not be allowed to continue unchecked.
“We have advised the family to approach the courts and enforce their legal rights in this matter.”

He said, “From our records, our relentless battle against crime and criminality is yielding positive result as we continue to work assiduously to maintain a low level of crime I met in the state on assumption of duty.
“We shall maintain the tempo and appreciate the continuous support of members of the public in order to drastically reduce criminal activities in all nooks and crannies of the state.”
He urged members of the public to always make useful information available to the police, saying they could not work effectively without the support of the people.

ATM card suspension: Banks reject naira for visa payment

Oyetunji Abioye

Thousands of United Kingdom and Canadian visa applicants and intending travellers wanting to book hotels online were stranded on Monday as Deposit Money Banks stopped their naira debit cards from being used for dollar and other foreign currency-denominated transactions.
The DMBs had on Friday stopped their naira debit cards from dispensing dollars to customers via Automated Teller Machines in foreign countries, as well as disallowed the cards from being used for online and Point of Sale transactions.
The banks cited dollar scarcity and volatility in the foreign exchange market as reasons.
Guaranty Trust Bank, Standard Chartered Bank and Stanbic IBTC Bank have already stopped the withdrawal of foreign currencies from the ATMs by their customers who travel abroad and cut the value of their online and PoS transactions to $100 per month.
The development made the UK visa applicants wanting to pay the mandatory $118 for the six-month and $499 for the two-year visas through their naira debit cards to be stranded.
Payment for the UK visa is done online via the government-designated website.
Travelling agents and applicants said they could not complete the UK visa application procedures on Monday. They said payments with naira debit cards of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, Ecobank Nigeria, United Bank for Africa Plc and other banks were declined.
It was further learnt that intending travellers and visa applicants wanting to make hotel booking online could not do so as their transactions via the naira debit cards were declined by the banks.
“This is terrible. I am finding it difficult to pay for my UK visa online. I have filled the form. I have got to the payment section and I was trying to pay online but the transaction was declined,” a visa applicant, who identified himself simply as John, told our correspondent at the UK visa application centre in Victoria Island, Lagos on Monday.
Travelling agents assisting the visa applicants to fill their forms said they found it difficult to make payment for UK and Canadian visas online using naira debit cards.
The Chief Executive Officer, Flying Partner, a Lagos-based travel agency, Mr. Kunle Oladele, said, “We could not make payment for the UK and Canadian visa applications online. The few payments we made were done through our partners in foreign countries, who used international debit cards issued by foreign banks.
“We called our partners in South Africa, UK and the United States to do so for us. It is very terrible. I am not sure we can continue like this. Canadian visa applicants will have to go to the country’s visa office now.”
Bank officials told our correspondent on Monday that they could not help the situation, citing the scarcity of dollars as the reason for the suspension of visa payment services.
“There is no dollar again in the country. There is nothing we can do about it,” an official of GTBank told our correspondent on the condition of anonymity.
Meanwhile, hundreds of customers besieged banking halls on Monday to apply for dollar debit cards, a day after the banks suspended naira debit cards from working overseas.
When our correspondent visited some bank branches, crowds of customers were seen filling forms to open domiciliary accounts and to obtain dollar debit cards.
Stanbic IBTC Bank and Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria had on Friday advised customers seeking to carry out transactions denominated in foreign currencies to apply for dollar or pound sterling debit and credit cards.
According to them, such cards will be linked to the customers’ domiciliary accounts.
In a notice to customers on Friday entitled: ‘Review of the international spending limit on your naira MasterCard’, GTBank stated, “We write to inform you of the monthly spending limit currently applicable when using your GTBank naira MasterCard for international payments via PoS and online.
“(The) previous monthly limit via PoS and online was $250; the new monthly limit via PoS and online is now $100. Kindly note that ATM cash withdrawal on your naira MasterCard is now only available in Nigeria.”
The development has also made students studying in the UK, US, Canada, Ukraine and other parts of the world to face more challenges getting their monthly stipends from their parents.
Most of the students had relied on ATM card withdrawals to get their monthly stipends from their parents before now.
Although other banks have yet to announce the suspension of ATM card services abroad, findings by our correspondent showed that many lenders had reduced drastically the amount that customers could withdraw via ATMs abroad.
The decision by some banks to suspend overseas ATM card services and online forex transactions came barely one week after the Central Bank of Nigeria, through the Bankers’ Committee, raised concerns about what it called the indiscriminate and suspicious manner in which some bank customers were spending dollars and other foreign currencies abroad through their naira debit cards.
Consequently, the regulator said it had concluded that bank customers who spent above the $50,000 annual forex limit it imposed would be barred from the forex market.
Dollar scarcity has been ravaging the economy after the price of crude oil, Nigeria’s main forex earner, crashed from $115 per barrel in June 2014 to around $51.4 per barrel currently.
The nation’s foreign exchange reserves have been depleting since then.
Last Wednesday, the country’s external reserves hit an 11-year low of $24.21bn, the latest data posted on the CBN website showed.

‘NYSC’ll sustain health scheme in rural areas’

Samuel Awoyinfa and Bukola Adebayo
The National Youth Service Corps has said that it will intensify efforts to continue and sustain the Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers programme until the initiative is well established and owned by many rural communities in the country.
The Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier-General Sule Zakari Kazaure,  in a statement by the NYSC Lagos Public Relations Officer, Belinda Faniyi, said the free medical programme had, since its inauguration 45 years ago, mobilised medical corps volunteers to provide health service to many rural dwellers across the country.
Kazaure added that the managers of the scheme were prepared to leverage the human resource at the scheme’s disposal to improve the quality of life of Nigerians.
He said this while inaugurating the 2016 nationwide health week under the corps’ HIRD in rural communities in Lagos and Ogun states.
He explained that the health initiative, which commenced two years ago, was aimed at bringing quality medical service to the people in rural communities in the country.
He said, “The NYSC scheme in the past 43 years has not relented in ensuring that its mandate is vigorously pursued, thereby making meaningful impact on the lives of their host communities.
“Against this backdrop, the goal of the HIRD programme is to mobilise corps medical volunteers in the provision of health intervention through diagnosis, treatment, referrals and proper preventive mechanism, thereby enhancing the general well-being of rural dwellers across the nooks and crannies of Nigeria.”
Represented by the Director of Community Development Service and Special Projects, Mrs. Rhoda Kwaki, Kazaure noted that the initiative has not only become a reality; it has gained national acceptance.
He, however, remarked that the health initiative, which was going on simultaneously in selected rural communities in the country, would harness the youthfulness, strength, skill and the potential of corps members for sustainability of the programme.

Unilorin to admit less than 11,000 out of 103,238 applicants – VC

Success Nwogu, Ilorin
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali, has said that out of  103,238 applicants  comprising 21,082 males and 52,156 females for admission to the university  for next session, the university will be able to  accommodate less than 11,000.
He stated that the university was receiving high admission pressure from applicants even when some federal universities, according to him, had 148 admission seekers.
Ambali spoke on Monday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, during Unilorin’s 32nd convocation media briefing.
He said the institution remained committed to improving its services, expanding its facilities and furthering its frontier through innovative programmes.
He added that it was more vigorously committed to meeting the rationale for the establishment of the university, as stated in the Third National Development Plan.
The VC said 67 of 6,069  first degree graduands  bagged first class.
He added that 1,505 made second class upper division,  3,200, second class lower; 1,124, third class  while 70 got pass.
Ambali said, “We received a letter to the effect that the Nigerian Army highest hierarchy has approved a collaborative programme leading to the award of a Master of Arts Degree in Peace and Security Studies with  Unilorin, through its Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies.
“Through this programme, senior officers of the Nigerian Army will be trained at Unilorin in continuation of the training at one of their higher educational institutions. With this, the university is poised to impact  more and contribute further to the Nigerian project.”
Ambali, who is also the Chairman of the Association of West Africa Universities, also said it was  unsavoury that no Nigerian university was ranked in the first 100 of the global university ranking.
He stated that the Nigerian universities were making efforts to be ranked better.

WARNING!!! See 4 Dangers Of Drinking Cold Water

water
Hey everyone!

Lets take a look at the harmful or negative effects of Cold water or too much cold water in our system. We all as individuals love cold stuffs especially after a sunny hectic day, we need some cold drinks or water to refresh and cool our body. This includes even me that’s writing this to you all lol; But we need to know this and how to minimize the rate at which we take in cold drinks regularly..

According to Natural Law, our normal body temperature is about 98.6 degrees F. If we raise that temperature a few degrees, the body starts to show signs of distress, and we say we have a fever.
We try hard to return to homeostasis or normal functioning. Experts have said drinking cold water regularly could have negative impact on the heart and the digestive system. Food and healthy living expert say that cold water is at a temperature that contradicts the overall temperature within the body system.

Even though cold drinks or water has many health benefits, drinking ice water or cold water can only give temporary relief and drinking ice water regularly has its downside.
Here are some reasons why you shouldn’t drink ice or cold water:
1 Slows Down Digestion:
Drinking ice water or cold water hampers the process of digesting food as it causes your blood vessels to shrink. This can slow down the process of digestion and as the food is not digested properly, the nutrients are lost or not absorbed by the body.
2 May Lead To sore throat:
Drinking cold water can cause the buildup of respiratory mucosa, which is a protective layer of the respiratory tract. When this layer gets congested, the respiratory tract is exposed and becomes vulnerable to various infections and hence the chances of your throat turning sore are high.
3 Shortage Of nutrients:
The body’s temperature is 37o C and when you drink something at a very low temperature, your body has to spend energy to regulate its temperature. This spent energy is otherwise used to digest food and absorb nutrients, thereby leaving your body short of nutrition.
4 Decreases your heart rate:
Drinking ice water or cold water decreases your heart rate. Studies have shown that drinking ice water stimulates the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve is the 10th cranial nerve and is an important part of the body’s autonomous nervous system that controls involuntary actions of the body. The vagus nerve mediates the lowering of the heart rate and the low temperatures of ice cold water act as a stimulus to the nerve which causes the heart rate to drop.

In conclusion, take water at a normal temperature, the brain is sensitive to temperature change which is why it freezes when one drinks cold water at first, adding that such continuous seizure is not good for it, more so That is why we advise people not to take drugs with cold water. The drugs will not digest on time; it means you won’t get the best of the drugs because the water did not dissolve on time. Thank You for reading, Kindly drop your thoughts below.

Recession Palava: See How Abuja Couples Now Sell Their Expensive Wedding Rings To Feed....

ring
The economic recession is biting harder by the day and it’s affecting symbols of many unions. DEBORAH OCHENI recently ran into a section of the popular Wuse Market where couples trade their highly priced bridal wears for cash
At first it looked like fable from one of the Nollywood series until the reporter’s interaction with some of them revealed the unimaginable true story. But the truth is that the level of hardship in the country has reached an alarming rate.
Who will ever think of a couple who are barely six months old in marriage letting go of their precious symbol and reminder of their marital vow just to meet up with their needs?
While some are in this act because it is the only available means left for them to survive, others are selling it because of increase in value of the dollar (foreign exchange) which invariably boosts the price of foreign made wears.
